When SMS works better than email

SMS costs more than email and is more intrusive. That's exactly why it works – but only in the right moments.

When it's time-critical

A rescheduled appointment, delivery today, an offer that ends tomorrow. An email might get read in the evening; an SMS usually within minutes.

When appointments are involved

Practices, hairdressers, garages, consultancies. A reminder the day before noticeably reduces no-shows – and every prevented no-show is money directly.

When customers are waiting for something

Order confirmation, shipping notice, ready for collection. Customers then stop chasing you, which reduces the load on customer service.

Typical use cases

Appointment reminder

Automatically 24 hours before, with date, time and the option to reschedule. The classic – and usually the only use case that pays for itself within weeks.

Shipping and collection

"Your order is on its way" or "ready for collection now". Short, concrete, no advertising. That's exactly what builds trust for the next order.

Time-limited offer

An offer ending today doesn't belong in an email. Use sparingly: anyone sending weekly discounts by SMS loses subscribers fast.

Re-engagement

A short nudge to customers who haven't bought in a long time. Works when the message feels personal rather than like a mass send.

Frequently asked questions

How high is the open rate for SMS?
Over 95 percent of SMS messages get read, most within the first few minutes. That's considerably more than email. The reason is mundane: an inbox holds hundreds of unread messages, an SMS inbox rarely more than a handful.
What does SMS marketing cost?
In Switzerland an SMS via a business provider typically costs five to ten centimes. With 500 customers and one send per month that's CHF 25 to 50. On top comes the one-off setup of automations and templates from around CHF 800. Weigh the cost against a single prevented no-show – it usually pays for itself quickly.
Is SMS marketing legal in Switzerland?
Only with prior consent. The Federal Act against Unfair Competition treats promotional SMS like promotional email: the recipient must have agreed, be able to identify the sender and unsubscribe easily. Purely transactional messages such as appointment reminders or shipping confirmations don't count as advertising. We set up consent properly and document it.
Which SMS campaigns work best?
Appointment reminders and shipping notices – messages the customer is waiting for anyway. For promotions, time-limited offers work best. What doesn't work: regular discount messages without an occasion. Unsubscribe rates then rise fast, and unlike email a lost SMS contact is hard to win back.
Can I combine SMS with email marketing?
Yes, and it's usually the better approach. The split is simple: email for anything that needs explaining – newsletters, product news, longer content. SMS for anything that matters right now. Using both for the same thing annoys your customers twice.
How many characters does an SMS have?
160 characters per message. Beyond that the SMS gets split and billed twice. Accented characters and emojis reduce the limit to 70 characters, because a different encoding kicks in. We write templates so they fit into a single message – which halves the cost of every send.
